Mav Alert System

If you were on campus during the storm last Tuesday, you not only heard tornado sirens, but also the Mav Alert System. This system is what UTA uses to communicate to everyone on campus during a major emergency. Mav Alert not only will send a message through outside loudspeakers, but also through speakers inside the buildings. Mav Alert also sends an email to your school email address and can send you a text message. If you are interested in getting a text from Mav Alert visit www.uta.edu/mavalert.

Graduate School at UTA

UTA offers a wide variety of graduate programs. There are over 70 master’s degrees available and 30 doctoral degrees. Student Lauren Ellison is unsure if she will attend graduate school because of the cost. Courtney Griffitts is a graduate student and part time lecturer teaching French. Courtney says that being in the graduate program has given her a larger perspective of her field of study and having a master’s degree will make it where she can be a teacher. Director of Graduate Recruiting Alisa Johnson tells about the different requirements to get into a graduate program. Johnson also says the time spent in graduate school depends on the program. Some programs can take only 30 semester hours where as some can take up to 70 semester hours. If you would like to know more about the programs offered at UTA visit grad.pci.uta.edu.

Rape Aggression Defense Class

Last Saturday the MAC offered a free self defense class for women hosted by the Rape Aggression Defense Program. Randy Reynolds, RAD instructor and UTA Policeman, taught the girls many different skills to protect themselves. Randy has taught the class for about seven years now and enjoys doing it since he knows the students will take what they have learned and apply it. He stressed that the girls do not distract themselves with texting or talking on the phone while they walk on campus. He expressed the dangers of walking alone at night but also taught the girls how to be vocal and use different techniques to keep them safe. The girls said that they would now feel more confident in their abilites if they were put into a bad situation.

Marines Return Home

After being overseas for the past seven months, about 70 United States Marines returned home. The Marines were all stationed at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, Texas before they deployed. They went through an additional rigorous training after going through the traditional boot camp and infantry schools through the military. The men were stationed in Afghanistan during their deployment and were just as excited to be home as the people waiting on them. The base was flooded with the loved ones of these Marines and as they deplaned they were swarmed and overcome by hugs. Tears of joy were flowing from just about every person at the base. These men will now get to spend Valentine’s Day with their wives and children.

Student Congress Resolutions

Student Congress is pushing new resolutions for campus. Resolutions are like bills presented to congress to make a change or come up with a solution to a problem. One of the new resolutions proposed to Student Congress will allow students to print using their I.D. cards, but instead of charging their card the printing fee will go straight to their MyMav account. While it doesn’t sound like a big change, some past resolutions have influenced the building of the Special Events Center. Any student can writea resolution and present it. Student Congress has a database of past resolutions to give students an idea of how to write them. The database as well as more information about resolutions available at www.uta.edu/sc.
