Marie Pastucek

Arlington, Tx- Marie Pastucek was born in the 1920′s in the beautiful state of Texas. At the tender age of 4 years old she would encounter and epidemic that would cause here to almost lose her life, Polio. Poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis, is a virus disease affecting the central nervous system. Throughout most of human history the polio virus was ubiquitous and infected almost all children as soon as they were weaned from breast milk to a mixed diet, but infection caused symptoms in only a small minority. Marie was apart of that small minority. Due to her strong will to survive Marie beat the disease and was able to live a normal life. She would bear seven kids and of the seven the most decorated would be her eldest son Robert Pastucek. Robert would join the Air Force, first becoming a Basic Airman, then becoming a Colonel for the historical Vietnam War. Marie said her son was a true leader his whole life. She is proud that her son was able to serve his country proud. Now a retired veteran Robert lives in Arlington, VA. While Marie lives in Arlington, TX. There bond still remains close even miles apart. Robert has put his military background to use building his own Cessna plane with an extra gas tank. Why the extra tank? Richard wanted the ability to fly from Virginia to Texas to visit his mother, a strong-willed Texan that has endured her own triumphs.

Bianca Sauls is no rookie to playing sports at the University of Texas-Arlington. Sauls previous four years of school were as a student athlete, but by way of UTA’s volleyball team. This year the fifth year senoir has got a chance to showcase her basketball skill and has only made UTA’s womens Coach Samanatha Morrow think what could have been if Sauls would have played for her all four years. Sauls has led the Mavericks in scoring, minutes played, and rebounding this year. Even though this is her first year playing basketball for the school, Sauls is still considered a senior, which she is the only one on the team. Coaches and teammates say her knack for the game even though she played another sport while in college was still there.

Blindfolded Marathon Runner

Austin Tx- Austin resident EJ Scott is raising awareness of the disease CHOROIDAREMA or C-H-M, a genetic eye disease that slowly erodes your periphery vision and eventually your central vision. But the way he is raising awareness is what’s causing a stir. He is running marathons without using a crucial tool that every other marathon runner will be using, his eyesight. EJ has to run each race blindfolded because the exposure to sunlight would further damage his eyes. EJ’s brother and 7 year old son also have been diagnosed with the disease, which has no cure prompting EJ to do something to gain attention. EJ will be running in twelve marathons this year, one every month hoping to raise $12,000 per marathon. He’s already competed in two marathons, with the second being over the weekend in Lance Armstrong Cancer awareness event. His next race will be in Los Angeles, March 18. You can learn more about his condition at C-H-M–dot–org.\
