Remember the heroes- Mary Catherine Smith

Originally from Indianapolis, Mary Catherine Smith was born in 1919. In her early 20’s she was sent to France with the US Army where she served as a field surgery nurse during the World War II. She worked under the command of General George Patton. Her experience was so unique and special and even though they went through a lot, she says if she had a chance to do it again she wouldn’t think twice. She didn’t get married until she came back from the service. Her labor in the US Army lasted for 3 years but the memories will remain forever.

Natural Gas

 

Students in Thomas Christie’s public relations campaigns class have been selected to participate in America’s Natural Gas Alliance Collegiate Energy Challenge. The class created a marketing agency, which its named “360 Local.” The group’s main purpose is to raise awareness on the effect that natural gas production plays on UTA’s campus and how it affects UTA students.  In fact there are 22 drilling wells on UTA, and 27 percent of royalties go toward scholarships and job opportunities. The event also offered free food and the possibility of winning an IPAD. The challenge will make the final decision at the end of the semester and will choose which campaigns will present the work in Washington D.C.

2 year-old missing boy

An Amber Alert has been issued in Cleveland, Texas area for a missing two-year old boy.  Devon Davis was last seen at his family’s home north of Houston Tuesday afternoon. The boy’s mother says when she woke up from a nap he was gone. Since the day of the disappearance police has been working hard on trying to find the missing boy. Divers are searching bodies of water with sonar equipment but so far they haven’t found anything. Deputies with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office fear the child may have been abducted or he may have wandered off.

UTA WOMEN’S TENNIS

The defending southland conference champions, the UTA women’s team traveled to San Marcos where they dropped their first conference match this past Saturday in a tough battle against Texas State. After 4 hours of game the bobcats that played with the support of the crowd took down the mavericks by a final score of 4-3. The uta women’s team is now 4-1 in conference action. According to Head Coach Diego Benitez the girls are still in good position to win the conference. They won’t have too much time to recover after this heartbreaking loss as they will travel to Natitoches, Louisiana on Wednesday where they will face another big opponent from the conference, the northwestern demons.

Sustainability award

UT Arlington has been selected as a finalist of the Sustainable 16, a group of colleges and universities that demonstrate excellence in environmental and sustainability academics. This recognition seems to be a reward for all the work the university is putting on environmental practices. In fact, recycling coordinator Becky told us about a new program UTA is already working on. This is the first national tournament for environmental and sustainability academic excellence and UTA is already among that group of distinguished programs. The winner will be announced by a group of distinguished environmental science professionals on Monday, April 2.

Waco siege

19 years after the Waco siege, the victims are still remembered. The siege began when federal agents of the United States attempted to execute a search warrant at the Branch Davidian near to Waco, Texas. On February 28 and immediately after the attempt to serve the warrant, an intense gunfire erupted lasting more than 2 hours. During the intend to arrest the cult group’s leader, David Koresh, four agents and six Davidians were killed, generating a 51-day standoff. The seizure ended up with 76 people dead including more than twenty children and the entire complex destroyed by fire.

UTA Men’s tennis

The tennis season has already started. The UTA men’s tennis team  faced the university of TCU last Tuesday February 21st at the UTA tennis courts. The mavericks started out playing very well doubles and they were able to win the first point opening the day with a lead. However the frogs who are ranked 44th in the nation came back very strong after the break and knocked down the mavericks winning 5 out of 6 sinlge matches. Only local player Jason Lateko was able to give the mavericks a singles’ victory. Both men’s and women’s tennis team will face Nichols State University on February 28th at the UTA tennis courts.

HOW TO GET A FEDERAL JOB

 

Given the current economic state, many positions are becoming available with the Federal Government. The Career Center of the University organized an event on how to find a federal job. The talk was led by a CIA agent who surprised the audience with his appearance and responded to student’s questions. He gave instructions on how to write a federal resume as well as what to do to get jobs in the many types of government agencies. Students were also able to personally talk to the CIA agent about their own interests and get advice from him. The Associated Director Career Center Cheri Butler gave some tips on what to expect when applying for a federal job.

The Art Exhibit – Medium is the Message

The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington is presenting a group show demonstrating a wide variety of painting styles, techniques and content. The exhibition called “the medium is the message” features works by artists such as J.T. Grant, Melissa Miller, Aaron Parazette, Susie Rosmarin, Christian Shumann, John Holt Smith, Kim Squaglia, Jackie Tileston, and Michael Tole. The works are meant to showcase the versatility and range of paint as an artistic medium. The event will run until February 11 in an exhibition that is totally opened to the public and free of charge.

Drake’s Concert at UTA

The Grammy-nominated superstar Drake will perform March 2, 2012 in what will be the inaugural concert for the new $78 million College Park Center here at UTA.  The College Park Center arena has a capacity of 7,000 seats and will be the new home court for UT Arlington basketball and volleyball but also will serve as a commencement exercises, concerts and other major events. The tickets for the concert have already been sold out a month before the event. After knowing this success, students told us who they would like to see performing at the new arena in the future.
