Maverick Softball

The Maverick Softball team took on the Sam Houston State Bearkats last weekend. After losing both games on Friday’s doubleheader, UTA put on solid performance Saturday and won 3 to 2.  This brings the Mavericks record to 30 and 19 overall and 17 and 7 in conference play. The Bearkats took a two point lead by the third inning. In the fourth inning though, freshman Stephanie Gonzalez sent one down the middle allowing runners Rebecca Collom and Courtney Enocksen to tie up the game. In the sixth inning, freshman Taylor Zink, hit one out to right field and Ashley McCarroll scored the winning run. Search and Rescue

When you think about first responders, do you think firefighters or police? How about friends and co-workers?
In Pierce County Washington, a group of volunteers are getting some hands on training of a different kind. Specifically, these volunteer rescuers are learning how to assess earthquake damage, search buildings and rescue children and colleagues. They are essentially learning what to do in the event someone’s life depends on them.
According to statistics on disaster relief, 80% of the people that can be rescued post-disaster will be rescued by friends, relatives and co-workers. And that’s where these rescuers come in.
So when the big one hits, your rescuer may just be someone you know.

The UTA Fencing Club

The UTA Fencing club meets each week to practice and train in the age-old sport of fencing. Fencing refers to a family of sports and activities that feature armed mêlée combat. Modern fencing originated in France and is one of the four sports which has been featured at every modern Olympic Game. Fencing is often described as “Physical Chess” because of the mental aspect of the sport, but it can also be very physically demanding. The club practices and promotes this art, and accepts anyone who would like to join, even walk-ins. These members also get the chance to compete locally, nationally, or internationally. The Maverick Fencing Club practices Mondays and Thursdays from six to eight PM and Fridays from five-thirty to seven-thirty PM in the MAC room 133.
