University of Texs Arlington All-American excels in the Heptathlon

The 2011 Mens Track & Field First-Team All-American Romain Martin of University of Texas Arlington totaled 5,796 points and won six of the seven events in his first track meet of the season . He needed 5,750 points to earn the automatic spot in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships in the Heptathlon. Martin beat out the competition by more than 900 points at the invitational. Martin was ranked preseason #1 in the Heptathlon in recent polls and also holds the all time record in points at The University of Texas Arlington in both the Heptathlon(5897) and the Decathlon(7867).

Performances at College Park Center

College Park Center oppened its doors the Wednesday and the celebration could not have been the same with out the entertainment. Some of the half time performances included the maverick cheerleaders, drumline, Pep Band, the UTA Wranglers and a pecial performance of by the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

The opening of College Park Center marks the begining of a new era.

VOSOT Womens Soccer Tournament

The UTA Womens Soccer Club Team started their Spring Season. This Tuesday was their first practice. They will be having two tournaments this semester. one of the tournaments will be at UTA and the winner of the tournament has a chance to win five hundred dollars. The other tournament the lady mavs will be attending Texas A&M tournament which is to be held in April. The ladies have high hopes of winning both tournaments and winning the cash prize. UTA Mens Club Soccer President and Coach think the womens team has a good chance of winning because they have improved significally from previous seasons.

The Art Exhibit – Medium is the Message

The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington is presenting a group show demonstrating a wide variety of painting styles, techniques and content. The exhibition called “the medium is the message” features works by artists such as J.T. Grant, Melissa Miller, Aaron Parazette, Susie Rosmarin, Christian Shumann, John Holt Smith, Kim Squaglia, Jackie Tileston, and Michael Tole. The works are meant to showcase the versatility and range of paint as an artistic medium. The event will run until February 11 in an exhibition that is totally opened to the public and free of charge.

Krassimira Jordan Performs at U.T.A

Pianist Krassimira Jordan gave a musical performance for those who attended this past Thursday in Irons Hall located in the Fine Arts Building. She performed songs from various composers such as J.S Bach and Pantcho Vladigerov, just to name a few. Jordan was Professor of Piano at the world-renowned Vienna Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts for ten years, as well as having her debut at Carniege Hall. Besides being a Professor of Piano at Baylor University, she also teaches a select group of pianists and teacher-observers every June at the Bosendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna, Austria. Houston Students Hospitalized for Drugs

Over a dozen student were hospitalized last Tuesday in Cleveland, TX after taking an unknown substance. School officials say that fifteen students ingested unknown pills. Eight students were taken to the hospital and the others were checked out at the scene. School officials also sent home a letter to parents saying they were under the influence, the person that brought the pills to school was taken into custody.

Distinguished Teachers

The Academy of Distinguished Teachers is an award given to those faculty members who have demonstrated qualities that not only impressed their students, but also made them recognizable among their colleagues. It is a very prestigious award in the UT school system, with only one regional award ranking above it. There may only be a maximum of five teachers selected per year. The nomination however, is only the first step of many. Once they are nominated, they must collect several items such as student evaluations and class preparation materials to present, in an organized fashion, to the academy’s board. Once they give the final stamp of approval, the nomination becomes a reality.

Lying in Text Messages

Researchers state people are more likely to lie when text messaging. A study from the University of British Columbia found that people felt more comfortable hiding he truth through text messages. Study co-author and associate professor Ronald Cenfantelli states since you can not see the receiver of the text message it is easier to lie. He also explains when face to face one reads body language, eye contact, and other factors to determine if the person is lying. The professor further explained that text messaging is useful but when in doubt face to face communications is the way to go.

President Obama Talks About Tuition

President Obama states that everyone who wants to go to college or university should be able to. He is working on making that happen. During a stop at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the President unveiled a plan to make colleges and universities more affordable. He states the government will pushing schools to stop yearly tuition hikes. President Obama is also pushing for the creation of a billion dollar competition for the states to keep public tuition costs down. The changes would have to be approved by Congress.
