This year’s UTA Communication Day featured alumni, Marian Brown, after her successful year of being sworn in as Sheriff of Dallas County. Her speech delivered a focus on being relevant, ethical, and a leader. She is now the first African-American sheriff in Dallas County and one of only three African-American female sheriffs in the United States. Although her main focus is currently law enforcement, she believes her degree in Communication helped shape her career. “I think that had I studied criminal justice, I would have missed the Communications part of it… it is so key to being a leader; it’s so key in law enforcement as a whole,” she says.
