Deaf Track Athlete Walks On To The Team

Freshman sprinter Gareth Ashton has been running track since jr. high school in his hometown of Forney, Texas. He eventually was a regional qualifier in high school but even with the accolades, Ashton didn’t receive any collegiate offers. Ashton is deaf but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream of running for a Division 1 track program. So after enrolling into UT-Arlington he asked the track team for an opportunity to walk on. After showing his talent he’s currently still running for the team. Check out my story on one of the most inspirational athletes on the campus of UTA.

The Art of Walk Up Songs

The moment batters walk up to the plate they get a little burst of energy from their favorite tune. There’s just something about hearing the beat to the song you pick that’ll give you motivation to hit a dinger. The UTA baseball team explains how tough it is to pick that song, and also the effect it gives them when they walk up to the batters box.

Everyone doesn’t make a roster in division 1. If you do make the team that doesn’t mean you’re on scholarship either. Sophomore walk on Phil Childs has traveled a long road to get onto the UTA Mens Baseball roster. Here’s the story on the outfielder’s process to the Mavericks.

UTA Track Team Scorches Competition at the 38th Annual Bobby Lane Invitational

The Men’s and Women’s track team had a great showing at their lone home meet of the year on Saturday March 24th. All relays teams won gold as well as some individual runners. For some of the athletes, it was their last home meet of their careers, but they rose to the occasion and blazed around Maverick Stadium, one last time. The team’s next meet will be March 30-31, at the university of Texas at Austin for the Texas Relays.

Hervey Breaks School Record

February 10 was a night to remember for Kevin Hervey as he broke the school record for career rebounds. Hervey not only broke the record that night but he also led the team to a win with 33 points. The Mavericks battled against Texas State University while celebrating Military Night at the College Park Center. This game was key for UTA since the Bobcats were one spot ahead of them in the conference standings. With this win the Mavericks have placed themselves in the top four of the Sun Belt standings, and are looking at a first round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
