Sanctuary Campus

In March the Governor Greg Abbot and the County Sheriff had migratory disagreements. UTA recently has been having the same dilemma. During campus elections UTA students had the opportunity to vote in favor or against UTA becoming a sanctuary campus. I got to speak to a student who has a strong and personal opinion about this dilemma. President Kharbari has the final decision on this referendum but he has yet to make a comment on this topic.

Those who attended the event where able to learn how to recognize the warning signs, what actions to take, and what resources are available for those that need it. Jose Hernandez NASA Astronaut

The College of Engineering at UTA welcomed former NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez where he shared with students when and how he found out that he wanted to become an astronaut. He also shared his life experiences as a first generation Mexican American to go to space.  Hernandez enjoys telling his story to motivate and inspire young generations to come. He told students that anything is possible in life you just have to work for it. I spoke to two UTA students and they shared how they felt about his presentation.

The World Famous Wheelie-ing Elvi

The homecoming parade featured many floats and attractions and one of those was The World Famous Wheelie-ing Elvi. This organization started out as a joke by two Fort Worth residents in 1995. A former UTA student Bobby Ornelas is one of the original members who stayed. Bobby took over the group after many of the original members left and he changed the name and philosophy. He recruited his brother in law who is also a former UTA student but now he is one of UTA’s mechanical engineer senior lecture. For more information about this organization you can visit their website at http://www.twfwe.com.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Many young women under forty are often unaware of breast cancer risks. According to the National Breast Cancer foundation nearly eighty percent of young women diagnosed with breast cancer find their breast abnormally themselves. I spoke to two UTA students who shared different opinions about when you should take the mammogram exam. The UTA Health services provides a variety of different exams for women. If you would like to make an appointment or for more information you can visit the website uta.edu/healthservices and go under the section women’s health.

Student Struggles

Maintaining good grades and working a full time job for a college student is not easy, but not impossible. But have we ever thought about what it’s like owning your own business and going to school full time? I interviewed Andrea Cadena who is co-owner of her parents business. People always assume it’s a lot easier when she tells them she works with her parents but she explains how its a lot harder.
