KENDALL JOHNNY HAMILTON

Through the 2017 of season, the UTA Mavs’s men’s basketball team scored former Virginia Tech center Johnny Hamilton. Johnny hurt his thumb in his senior year season at Virginia Tech. Since he was injured and didn’t play, he still had one year of eligibility left through the NCAA. So, when Johnny decided to go to grad school at UT Arlington, the team picked him up for his final season, replacing their center Jorge Bilbao who graduated last year. I caught up with the center and head coach Scott Cross to see how the change is going for Johnny and his new teammates.

Kendall Philanthropy

Tri Delta Sorority held their annual Delta Madness Philanthropy Event last week at the MAC. The girls sold t-shirts, raffle tickets, and admission tickets. All of the proceeds went to the St. Jude Hospital for research for kids with cancer. Their President Elizabeth Herrera and Vice President of Philanthropy, Katelyn Stepp were both very proud of how well the event went. Before the event the girl had already raised about $4,000 and were hoping for much more at the event as Tri Delta as a whole around the country is hoping to raise $60 million for St. Jude in 5 years.

Opening Day

The UTA Men’s baseball team set a record for number of fans on their opening night with 2,008 people. The first 500 students received a free black out t-shirt and The Fuzzy’s Taco shop provided the concessions for the team. Students and fans were very excited for the game against the number one ranked TCU. The stands were full the entire game even though UTA was neck and neck the whole game. The TCU bats got hot late in the game and UTA lost their first home game.

Men’s Basketball vs Texas State

The UTA men’s basketball team played their rivals, the Texas State Bobcats this last Saturday. The Mavericks quickly took the lead and never looked back. On Military Appreciation Night and Alumni Night, the Mavs beat the Bobcats 76-61. Kevin Hervey lead the team with 19 points and 10 assists, making it his 9th double double on the season. Close behind him, Jorge Bilbao had 13 points and 4 rebounds. The mavericks are 9-0 this season when playing at home, and look to continue their home winning streak next week 2/11 where they will be playing Arkansas State. They game will be aired online at ESPN 3.
